Diving and the underground artist Collective in Huatulco

La Crucecita, Huatulco

We chose to come to La Crucecita, Huatulco for the National Park and good scuba diving. Unfortunately it is a bit of a tourist resort area.
Our first evening we were surprised at dinner when we saw everything in the menu was in English, most of the taxi drivers and waiters speak English….this didn’t even happen in Oaxaca City!
We found out this area was developed in the last 10 years into resorts for Canadians and Mexicans. There are direct flights from Toronto, and so many retired Canadian expats living here in gated communities or at the resorts. The names are fairly ludicrous like Secrets, Dreams….one only feels that the next resort needs to be named Lies.*

Unfortunately many newcomers here don’t seem to want to even TRY to speak Spanish….which we feel is a little disrespectful. I honestly wonder how hard is it for someone to say ‘Gracias’ even if it is the only word you learn!
In the restaurant one night we overheard some rather rude foreigners yell at a Mexican family near them asking in loud english “What is that drink?!” The family seemed stunned and didn’t seem to be able to speak english so they answered “Cerveza” (beer). I was absolutely stunned when the foreigner proceeded to repeat the word as if it was new. Its on EVERY menu in town next to the english, its not that hard and you MUST have heard this before?!?!?!
So that was a snapshot of life in a tourist town.

El Grillo Marinero - awesome seafood!
The best mochaccino frio at La Bicla Cafe!

Artist Collective

Whilst in La Crucecita Huatulco we did some artisenal mezcal tasting a a small house. (up to 60% alcohol -oh god a sip was too much!) Turns out Chaco and Jesus lead a local group of underground artists called The Collectivo.

They then invited us to check out their inhouse (literally) art gallery, participate in some yoga sessions and a film night with locals.

We took them up on the ‘intellectual movie night’ where they played the film ‘Bad Batch’ by a emerging director Ana Lily Amirpour (my film producer coming out here). Afterwards we got to comment on the film although I didn’t understand their thoughts (they spoke in Spanish) and they probably didn’t understand mine as I spoke in English!
If you’d like to join them for mezcal, film or yoga get in contact!

I was excited to have 2 days of diving which was great fun and saw some interesting coral and new animals. I’ll have a new post on this next!

Greg decided to get up and walk around the National Park at sunrise, he found a lovely beach to watch the sunrise from. Check it out below!

But sadly because of our allergies (Greg got heat rash and I was bitten to buggery by sea lice) we didn’t do too much swimming at the various beaches. Our last lunch was epic though. See the pics of our drinks! Sitting on the sand eating fish, prawns and watching the sea is divine.

Now we are flying to Mexico City and then rerouting to the Chiapas region, heading to San Cristobel de la Casas where the temperature is 9degress. So 21 degrees less than Huatulco….moy frio!

Tips / Where to stay

  • Accommodation: Hotel Arenas del Pacifico – a lovely cheap hotel in a local area quite close to the main street with restaurants. Very chilly pool!
  • Highly recommended dive shop: Huatulco Dive Centre
*Very safe, keeps good safety record and small groups with instructors.
  • Restaurant: El Grillo Marinero
  • Cafe: La Bicla Cafe inside the heladario La Michoacana  – go for awesome coffee & icecream.

*No we didn’t stay at those huge crazy all-inclusive resorts or step foot in them. Not really our style!

Please note that unless stated these are our own recommendations and there is no commission.

  1. There are so many parts of the world that I still want to explore. Enough with the mainstream tourist destination and maybe it’s about time for us to explore. I’ve been to South Korea last year and saw the beauty of Nami island. This year, I am planning to go back but this time, I will try to visit the places that are not that popular yet there’s indeed a charm I can see from the place. This is making me so excited! I hope that my friends would be wiling enough to join me.
