Under the Pacific Ocean, Mexico

This was the closest dive site to Oaxaca and Chiapas region and in the newly created National Park.It was so exciting to dedicate 2 days just to diving! Normally with a partner that doesnt dive I feel a bit bad when he has to entertain himself – however he was quite content to go rainforest walking, come snorkelling – which ended up with him sitting on the boat and chatting to the local guy who grew up in the reserve.

Some really great highlights were

• Two seahorses (caballo de mar) intertwined with coral. They were about as large as my hand.
• Millions of manta rays at El Violin – so many resting under the sand we couldn’t touch the bottom with our fins for fear of disturbing them! Just little eyes poking out of the sand (see video below 24″ onwards)
• bright blue nudibranches
• loads of puffer fish and box fish
• And so many types of starfish / sea stars

The diving is highly recommended although visibility in January can be chancy. It was quite chilly on some of the second dives, remember you are in the Pacific Ocean and not on the other side of Mexico which is more sheltered and warm.

I went with Huatulco Dive Centre and they were fantastic. New wetsuits, great instructors and small groups.
